Do you want to start making money as soon as possible from your already existing hair salon? Then, it sounds like you’re in need of a list of 10 hair salon essentials to start up your hair salon.

I remember when I was in my first year of college, I needed extra money so I decided to start a hair salon. It wasn’t a difficult decision to make.

I already had a previous background in hair-styling and at the time I didn’t have any money to invest in a trading business. To be honest I’m not really the best sales person but I’m working on it though.

Even though I already had a background in hair-styling, I want you to know that I didn’t always have that. If you don’t really know anything about hair-styling I want you to know that it’s never too late to learn and start your own hair salon.

Here is a blog post on how to start a successful hair salon in 2023.

Anyways, I did my research and there wasn’t any information that could help me as a college student who wanted to start a hair salon. So, I took it upon myself to help you out so you have a very detailed guide on the 10 hair salon essentials you need to run a success hair salon.

As a hair braided and stylist here are the 10 essential you will need to start a hair salon.

Combs and brushes

Honestly, most clients you’re going to get do not bring their own hair equipment to hair appointments. They will expect you you use your own combs and equipment. It’s your responsibility to get the appropriate combs and brushes that you’re going to be using.

It’s extremely important that you sterilize what ever equipment you’re going to be using. You don’t want to be transmitting diseases or anything.

As a beginner braider I first started with a basic cutting comb and a wide tooth comb. Trust me you don’t need to go buy the most expensive comb sets when you’re starting out. I mean it’s a good investment but it’s really not necessary.

Client chair

Well this is definitely important because where is your client going to sit, right? A basic plastic chair would do just fine. Just make sure that it’s a comfortable chair.

I didn’t actually buy a chair I just borrowed one of the chair from the reading rooms in my hall. Remember we’re just starting out we don’t have any money. We’re working with what we’ve got.

Hair moose and hair spray

This is basically for the aftercare of whatever hairstyles you make as a hairstylist. The after care is what makes the difference. Your clients feel like they’ve actually gotten their hair done when you’ve done the appropriate after care. I know my favorite part of getting my hair done is when I get the hair spray at the end.

Apron

This is all about making your hair salon look as professional as possible. This helps create a specific brand for your hair salon. I’d recommend you be as intention as possible with your colors just the general branding of your hair salon.

Braiding hair rack

A common thing that I’ve noticed from my clients is that no one likes to hold the hair extensions. So, I’d highly recommend getting a braiding hair rack.

Edge control and hair cream

I said previously, clients really expect you to have everything. So it’s your responsibility to get really good and budget friendly products that your clients can use when getting their hair done.

Besides having this just give your hair salon brand that professional look and that’s what you want.

Blow dryer

Before you start to invest in all the fancy hair gadgets out there, especially as a beginner, I’d recommend getting a hair dryer first. Remember we’re trying to be as budget friendly as possible so I’d recommend starting with a more budget friendly one before you start buying the expensive kind.

You don’t really have a client base yet and if you do decide to invest, you’ll probably not even be using it quiet often. It’s going to take a while before you get any return on investment.

Price list

It is extremely important to have a price list for your customers. Not only does it make you seem more professional and organized, it prevents you from arguing unnecessarily with clients. They can see for themselves how much you offer your services and they can then decide if its worth it to them or not.

Remember your prices should never be unreasonably cheap. Research has shown that people tend not to buy the cheapest option. So don’t think that you’re going to get more clients because your services are really cheap.

It’s important to know your worth as a hairstylist and also remember all the equipment you’re investing in you’re going to have to get your money back some how.

Social media

A good social media is definitely one of the most important things on this hair salon must have list . I wish I started taking my social media accounts seriously early on. People don’t know you yet so their going to need proof that you’re competent enough to trust.

They basically want to see your work. No one is going to book you if you don’t have a nice looking portfolio. Works of the mouth can only take you so far and a simple Instagram post can do alot of convincing.

Shampoo and Conditioner

If you’re going to be offering hair washing services it is important to invest In good budget friendly hair products. You don’t want to go for really cheap unfriendly products to cut cost because you’re going to lose your clients.

You don’t want to make that kind of impression because clients are more likely to share bad reviews than good ones. So a good quality shampoo and conditioner should definitely be high on your hair salon must have’s list.
