Step by step guide on how to revamp your old wig at home
Step 1
Use a wide tooth comb to de tangle hair completely working your way to the top to reduce shedding. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS USING A BRUSH, you wouldn’t be able to unravel all the knots.
If the hair is too hard and being difficult I’d recommend spraying on a little water (Not soaking it!) and using live in conditioner.
Step 2
Mix in a bucket, boiled water and about an ounce of your desired conditioner. Soak hair in the bucket for about 30 minutes. After, de tangle hair carefully then rinse.
Step 3
Lather hair in shampoo and wash about 3 times or until the water isn’t filthy and then rinse. Watch the video above to see the technique for washing.DO NOT WASH THE HAIR LIKE YOU WOULD WASH CLOTHES! That will tangle up the hair and make things worse.
Step 4
Condition the hair then wrap it in plastic bag and keep in a warm dry place for 30 minutes.
Step 5
Completely detangle the hair then rinse off the conditioner and allow the hair to air dry.
Step 6
Comb through the dry hair and straighten the hair track by track. DO NOT JUST RUN YOUR STRAIGHTER THROUGH THE HAIR A FEW TIMES AND BE DONE! Run a hot comb through the top and front sections of the hair and slick down the fly always with wax. This makes a huge difference.
Step 7
Curl the hair in small sections using a curling iron and then pin them up to cool in the curled position to give bouncier curls.
Step 8
Once cool unravel the curls and style in anyway you prefer. Apply your favorite hair oil and hair spray and enjoy your wig!
How to store your wigs
If you don’t take proper care of your wigs they’re going to go back to that horrendous state you worked so hard to revive your hair from.
We all want to have the perfectly styled wig ready to wear whenever we want but that can’t happen unless you actually store and care for your wig properly.
Here are some tips on how to store your wigs properly.
1. Once you take off that wig the first thing you need to do is comb through thoroughly to make sure there are no tangles
2. Let the wig dry after each use. You’ve been wearing it all day of course you’re going to sweat and nobody likes a damp smelly wig, So let it air dry or blow dry it.
3. Once it’s dry you can either put it on display on your wig stand (although, it might gather dust if you leave it for too long so definitely cover with plastic) or store in a silk draw string bag till the next time.
Why does your wig get crusty?
Here are a few reasons why your wig gets tangled very quickly, knowing these reasons will prevent you from needing to revamp your old wig.
Swimming in chlorine or sea water
Swimming in concentrates water such as pools and beach water is not good for your wig.
This is because the high concentration of the water will pull out moisture from anywhere it can get it. Including you human hair wig. This causes the wig to look dry and tangle easily.
Excessive bleaching
The use of bleach and chemical straighteners too often on human hair wig can damage the hair strands and cause them to break.
After a period of time you’ll notice uneven dry strands that easily tangle up into knots.
Excessive heat styling
Just like the hair that grows out of your hair, your human hair wig is also very susceptible to heat damage that can cause breakage of hair strands and make the wig appear uneven.
This damaged hair is very prone to tangled that can cause even more breakage.
Excessive sun exposure
Sun damage is a thing guys! If you expose your wig to the UV rays of the sun excessively this can cause damage to your hair.
Although, sunlight is great and beneficial to you, You don’t need to spend your entire day out in the hot sun.
Not moisturizing
The fastest way to tangle up your wig is to not effectively moisturize. Dry hair strands are prone to tangling due to the increased friction and this can cause damage to the strands, if the hair is not detangled properly.
To avoid unnecessary revamping just remember to always moisturize your human hair wig.
Tips for to prevent wig from looking crusty!
Here are a few tips to prevent your wig from getting crusty and you needing to revamp your old wig
Don’t rinse wigs with hot water
Exposing human hair to high temperatures, can cause the proteins in the hair to be damaged. Once this happens the integrity of the hair is compromised.
So that simply actions that do not usually cause hair to break (such as brushing your wig) will result in a lot of hair loss.
Avoiding swimming with wigs
If you want to maintain the longevity of your wig then I would recommend avoid going to the beach or pool wearing a wig.
As previously explained the water in pools and beaches are very concentrated and consequently they pull water from anywhere they can get it to try and make themselves less concentrated.
This means that your wigs will end up loosing all the moisture you must have put in, and this can lead to hair damage.
Wash wigs thoroughly after each use
It can be very tempting to just take off your wig and toss it to the side after use but don’t do it. This is one of the most common reasons why wigs matte up and need revamping.
Before storing your wigs appropriately, make sure your wash away all the oils and debris that that accumulated on the wig during the time it was worn.
Leave the Cutting, bleaching and coloring to your stylists
DIYs are fun and a great way to save some money while learning new skills but do know who doesn’t love a good DIY project? Your very expensive human hair wig.
Coloring hair is a skill that should be learned properly before actually practicing on very expensive hair. If you don’t want to make a mistake that can damage your wig then don’t dye it yourself.
Avoid styling wig when wet.
When hair is wet, it is very fragile and easy to break. So to prevent unnecessary hair loss, ensure that your wig is dried properly before any form of styling.
