As the name implies, faux locs are false locs, like how you have false lashes.

The process of installing faux locs include braiding your natural hair and wrapping your hair with a kinky hair extension. Both synthetic or natural kinky hair extensions can be used to give the impression of locs.

It is a very beautiful and versatile hairstyles that is a great alternative to braids especially during summer.

Below are a few different kinds of faux locs;

  • Combs
  • Crocheting hooks
  • Hair ties
  • hair extensions

I would recommend using any type of kinky hair extension.

Just remember that the longer the kinky hair extension the better, if you’re going for longer, thicker locs.

Passion twist hair extensions are also a good option but they are on the more expensive side.

This depends on the type of kinky hair extension you decide to use, the length and size of locs you want.

The darling Afro kinky and xpression ceres are basically the same size and I’d recommend using about 2 packs if you want a shoulder length bob of medium to small size. If you want mid back I’d add another pack so for every five inches increase in length I’d recommend adding another pack.

The rosemary kinky bulk is quite short so you’re going to be needing more compared to darling Afro kinky and xpression ceres.

3-4 packs of Darling passion twists will give you a mid length locs of small to medium size and if you want it waist length then make it 5.

The answer is actually subjective to how well you care for the locs.

Although, faux locs can typically last you for about 2 to 3 months. This is great because everyone knows that locs always look better as time goes by.

Yes, you can wash your hair while it’s in this protective style.

Step 1:

Before you start any hairstyle it is important you de tangle and moisturize your hair properly before you begin the process. it will prevent alot of unnecessary hair shedding and pain.

Step 2:

Sectioning hair and braiding. This step may vary for your hair texture and the length of locs you want.

If you or your client has natural hair and they want locs that are shorter, than their hair length you might want to braid the hair completely.

Then crotchet the hair through the roots but if the locs are longer than the hair you might not need to braid the hair completely half way would be good enough.

if the hair you’re working with is relaxed then you don’t need to braid it completely. If the locs are shorter than your hair length then just loop the half braided hair through the roots of the braid.

I wouldn’t recommend using braiding hair for this step you want as little tension on the roots as possible.

Step 3:

Crotchet hair through the roots and start wrapping the extension around the hair of the client.

Step 4:

To end it you want to start wrapping the hair up on the loc instead of down like you were previously doing. Continue doing this until the extension ends and the roll your palms against the loc to loc everything in.

If you don’t care for your loc extensions then it is prone to getting frizzy and looking messy just within a few weeks of use.

Therefore, it is important to always care for your loc extensions in order to keep them looking fresh and beautiful.

  • Hair moose
  • Hair gel
  • Hair butter
  • Hair essential oils
  • silk bonnet/scarf
  1. Use a silk bonnet and scarf. Your loc extensions are prone to getting caught in things and this caused the extensions to get frizzy and unravel quickly so to prevent this you want to wrap your locs in a silk scarf and wear a silk bonnet for extra protection.
  2. Massage scalp gently with your favorite oils and butters daily. This should be an essential part of your daily routine.
  3. Do the roll around technique with your favorite gel to reduce the amount of fly aways and loose stands.
  4. Use edge control on the new growth at the front to ensure your hair looks neat.
  5. Use hair moose to give your hair that new locs look.

You’ve probably had those old loc extensions for a while now and they are completely matted, frizzy and dull looking? Here is a simple guide to revamping old fizzy locs and making them look good as new.

  1. Soak up loc extensions in cold water and shampoo mixture for about an hour. Avoid using hot water because the hair is synthetic and heat can damage the fibers.
  2. Rinse off the shampoo with cold water and wash the hair until the build up of dust and dirty is completely washed off.
  3. Condition the hair and rinse. Fabric softener would be better to condition the hair than conditioner because it is made of synthetic fibers.
  4. Allow the hair to air dry in a cool place without any direct heat to preserve the fibers.
  5. At this point the hair might appear more fizzy with many loose strands, using eco gel, the rolling technique is best to to take those flyaways and frizz.
  6. Trim off the excess untamed strands but avoid doing this in excess.
  7. Apply hair moose to give the hair the new hair look and now your locs are as good as new!
